REVIEW: City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh My Freakin' God!

I thought City of Glass was my favorite, and you guys have been following my reviews, you'll know which one I hated the most City of Fucking Fallen Angels. City of Lost Souls just blew my fucking brains out! It made me jump, squeal, cry, laugh, curse, giggle, fangirl, murderous and lots lots more! This book has so many feeeellllsss!!

I honestly feel like crying.. AGAIN..

Cassandra Clare, you are amazing! The entire Shadowhunter world you created is just absolutely brilliant. I don't think I can ever stress that enough. Reading this made me want to be a Shadowhunter, fight demons, bargain with the fey (despite the danger), conjure magic and party with the vampires.. LOL.. I just love this series. I just love it so much it hurts that there's just one book left to read on TMI series. I know I've been irked about the fact that this series moved past the 3rd book, but after reading City of Lost Souls, I finally got why. There is indeed a better way to finish Jace and Clary's story

PLOT

"For as is often the happenstance with that which is precious and lost, when you find him again, he may well not be quite as you left him."
Jace was gone.
After they destroyed Lilith, he just disappeared.
Sebastian's body also vanished.
There was only one explanation for that... Sebastian's resurrection was successful.
Sebastian was alive.
He was alive. He was as alive as Jace.
But that wasn't the worse part.
Jace and Sebastian were one.
They were one and the same.
Hurt one. You hurt the other.

Up to what extent could the Shadowhunters do to save Jace?
How far would Clary go to save the soul of the man she loves?

THE CHARACTERS

Clary: I am very surprised with Clary on this book. She totally grew up. She was so different from the girl from City of Bones. Well, she does have her stupid, impulsive moments still, but she was been amazing on this book. I really like her persistence to save Jace and how she believes in him. I liked how brave and fearless she has been to do the things she did. YOU KICKASS GIRL! She wasn't the same infuriatingly whiny girl from the past books! I love love love her here. Of course, she will make mistakes but at least she doesn't take crap from anyone anymore, especially her Mom (oh God I hate Jocelyn in this book!). She thinks for herself and is not afraid to do what she thinks is right. I've always preferred Tessa over Clary, but I have to admit Clary was impressive here. THREE THUMBS UP FOR CLARY ON THIS BOOK!

Jace: Oh Jace. I miss my old Jace. You don't get to see much of the REAL Jace on this book. But still, when you do see bits of him, he will totally swoon you over. I feel bad that he has to suffer all this bullshit because of Sebastian. He does not deserve all of this. I could, however, understand what he was going through, that other part of him that is hidden in there. The part of him that just wanted to be with Clary. Also, he was hilarious as usual. Despite being possessed or connected with fucktard Sebastian he still retained that humor I love the most. But I do wish, there was more of Jace. I would be furious, if there will be no Jace and Clary time on the last book!!!!

Simon: I am admittedly not a big fan of Simon. But in City of Fallen Angels and here, he proved me why I should like him. He thought of stuff the Shadowhunters didn't. He was brave and self-less. But I will have to say, that I am extremely annoyed that he still hasn't admitted his feeling for Isabelle! Oh come on Simon! Be a man and tell her!! Simon was indeed a hero for me in this book!

Sebastian: I.WANT.TO.KILL.YOU!!!! I want to murder you, chop you into the tiny pieces, and the feed you to the dogs!!! You are a fucking crazy maniac! You are even crazier than your already crazy father. YOU M*888F*** A*****88!!! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! You are a fucking good actor really. I almost believed you. I almost freakin thought that there was some goodness within you, but then I was wrong. There was nothing human about you. There's only evil and demon blood. All traces of being human in you have disappeared. You are fucking pathetic.

Magnus + Alec: I like this couple, but due to some issues... They had a falling out... *sigh* so sad. I feel extremely terrible. The problem with this couple is trust. Trust is very important in any relationship, whether is between parents and children, boyfriend and girlfriend, brother or sister, trust should always be present. I feel bad for Magnus. He is so in love with Alec, but Alec just doesn't wanna see it. Tsk tsk.

THE LOVE STORY

Clary and Jace has always been one of my favorite fictional couple. They've always had that chemistry, that spark, between them even when we all thought they were siblings (of course I didn't think that! And I'm sure you guys didn't too). I loved how Jace will always come back for Clary. When Jace was binded with the bastard Sebastian, accidentally, he became himself again, and during that moment, that tiny moment she had with Clary... It was just amazeballs!!! I just couldn't talk. I was choking with my own tears. I was sobbing and giggling at the same time. It was crazy how this couple affected me especially on this book when everything was going against them. I just really really really wish what happen should happen! You guys know what I mean right?? *wink.wink* I know you guys are also waiting for that magical moment.. I've heard rumors.. that on the next book... Well you know what it is.. ^_^

FINAL RAMBLINGS

I am so in love with the entire Shadowhunter world. I would just like to emphasize that again, and again, and again. A book couldn't be more paranormal than this. It is a mix of all the paranormal beings in one. I just love it. Reminds me of the world of Harry Potter, that also drew me in it's pages, just like this one.

Speaking of Harry Potter, the whole thingy with Jace and Sebastian was a bit like the Voldermort/Harry scenario.

Harry Potter: "One cannot be killed, while the other one survived"
TMI: "Kill me and you kill Jace, too"

Yep. It's a little bit Harry Pottery for me. Noticed a bunch of other stuff too like the place where Sebastian was hiding is kind of similar to the cabinet that connects Hogwarts and Borgin and Burkes. It's not exactly alike, but it kind of reminds me of it.

City of Lost Souls is more intense that the prior books. You learn more about the stuff that hasn't been revealed on the other books. Oh and the connection between TMI and TID was just sweettttt!! Oh Brother Zachariah! Who the hell are you? Are you Will or my Jem??? I kind of have a clue but I don't want to make any assumptions. I'm currently reading Clockwork Princess now so I think I'll be able to get some clues from there.

All in all, I love everything in this book (aside from the adults who are supposed to take care of their kids). The action, the suspense, the heartbreaking moments between Jace-Clary and Magnus-Alec, the twists and turns, the secrets and all. I love every bits of that! And I definitely want more.

It doesn't change what we are to each other. It's like there's always been a piece of my soul missing, and that's inside of you, Clary. I know I told you once before that whether God exists or not, we're on our own. But when I'm with you, I'm not.
