REVIEW: Confess by Colleen Hoover

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

My rating:

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin.

"It's amazing how much distance one truth can create between two people."

REACTION AFTER READING THE BOOK

This book... gave me so much feels!!!

I love this book.
I love Colleen Hoover.
I love her writing. Her characters. Her stories. Everything she does is magic... Okay... with the exception of Ugly Love. I really could not believe she wrote that shit.
Okay going back...
Colleen Hoover writes with so much love, truth, and passion. And you feel it with every book she writes.

Gaaaahhh! Let me start with my review.

THE GIST

"I pass through the hospital doors knowing it'll be the last time."

The story starts with a prologue. Auburn was 15 and was on her way to see her highschool sweetheart, Adam, one more time. He was very sick.

"We've known for six months that it would end this way. Of course, we all prayed for a miracle, but this isn't the kind of miracle, but this isn't the kind of miracle that happens in real life."

(NOTE: I would just like to say that this short prologue was enough to make me sob uncontrollably... Goddamn you CoHo!! It was a beautiful scene.)

But the story really starts, a few years later when Auburn moved to Texas. The reason whu she moved was unknown at first, but you will eventually find out. But it was really heartbreaking...

Auburn wasn't badly broke, but she needs money.

A girl who hates the choices she's made in her life.
A girl who hates her career.
A girl who misses Portland.
A girl who desperately a second job, and now a girl who is reading the HELP WANTED sign she just noticed in the window.

She ended up knocking at the door and meeting Owen aka OMG... Why? Because that's his initials... No kidding. Hehe.

The job was pretty easy, she would need to assist Owen in selling his paintings at his gallery. Yep. OMG is an artist. And a pretty darn good one at that.

What she wasn't expecting though was for her to feel something for this stranger. She does have her worries, but it was the first time after a long while, that she actually start to become attracted to anyone.

But things aren't really that easy both for Auburn and Owen. Auburn wasn't just a girl looking for extra cash, she had reasons for why she needed it. Owen wasn't just this artist looking for an employee to help him sell his painting, he had deeper more darker secrets.

Not everything is s it looks like in the surface. Both Auburn and Owen have their own secrets. Only time would tell whether they'd choose to confess them to each other or not.

THE CHARACTERS

Auburn: I love this girl. Of all the female characters by CoHo, she was the one I could really relate to. I liked how deeply she loved and how she was willing to sacrifice her own happiness for the ones she loves. She made some stupid decisions, but you get to realise and understand why she did them. There were contributing factors as to why she did the things the did. When you're young, you're scared when a big responsibility is placed on your shoulders. And I think that's what happened to her. She got overwhelmed by that which is why she made the decision. I was placed in the same situation as she was, so I the emotions she felt, the struggle she felt... It was real. It was so real. I don't know how Colleen Hoover does it, but she characterise and develop her characters pretty well and Auburn is definitely a new favorite now.

OMG/Owen: Like Auburn, I actually loved this guy. The problem with him is that he lacks faith in people. He doesn't trust people to accept who he is, which is why he keeps secrets and in doesn't let people really see who he is. I hated him for not telling Auburn what happened and letting her think she didn't want her... Eeeehhh.. Communicating is okay Owen!! And not everyone would judge you. But other than that, I really liked Owen. Another book boyfriend right here. :)

Trey: He is effective in what he is meant to do. I'm not going to say anymore because it's a bit spoilery???... But I didn't like him... At all.

Emory: She needs to have her own book!!!

THE ROMANCE

I love them together. They are made to be together. And I liked how Colleen Hoover connected Auburn's past with her future. I didn't really see how Owen and Auburn's life was connected until towards the end which I thought was so good. So freakin good.

I thought it was sort of insta-lovey on Owen's part, but I towards the end you get to see why it wasn't and why this relationship was beautiful and how fate is a big part of how these two came together.

Ahhh.. I'm in love.

THINGS THAT I LIKED

- characters and their development
- romance
- plot twist
- the writing
- the artwork that is attached to this novel is just awesome
- dialogues

THINGS THAT I DIDN'T LIKE

- pretty much the insta-love type thingy that wasn't really insta-love...
- there were times that it became a little bit clicheish on some points

FINAL WORDS

This book was just beautiful.
I love, love, love it.
It is not without faults. Like I said, it had some cliched moments which is why I had to knock it one star, but other than that... I really really loved this.
I highly recommend it to everyone who loves contemporary romance books.
This book doesn't have too much sexy scenes in it, and I really really really appreciate that.
The things that you would focus more on this is the story about these two characters who are lost, but eventually found each other.

  2. Great review! I've been debating whether to buy this one or not for a while, and now I'm sure I will! It seems like the sort of think I love, especially because the book has colour art printed in it :)
